Jack A. Smith, Co-Founder & Chief Engineer, P.E., MSME
Jack is a registered Professional Engineer. He has over 29 years of engineering, research, and new product development experience. He has authored several technical papers and is the co-recipient of four patents. He earned BS and MS Mechanical Engineering degrees from the UTSA with a focus on Thermal and Fluid Sciences, Numerical Methods, and Computational Fluid Dynamics. While pursuing his BSME he received two NASA LARSS scholarships where he worked alongside CFD researchers in the Theoretical Flow Physics branch of NASA Langley. Jack’s MSME thesis focused on 3D multi-phase CFD simulation. Jack has a passion for CFD and has conducted many analyses spanning multi-species fluid mixing, heat transfer, combustion, and multi-phase phenomenon. CFD is a core service offered by FPSE, LLC.
Jack’s first 13 years of employment took place at SwRI and BorgWarner where he focused on low emissions alternative fueled engine development for on and off-highway applications (Natural Gas, LPG, Syngas, Diesel, Dual Fuel). He gained a broad combustion knowledge while optimizing combustion systems to maximize efficiency while meeting prescribed emissions targets (i.e. piston shape, valve timing, turbocharging, ignition, fuel/air mixing, model based control algorithms, etc). Jack was a co-recipient of an R&D 100 award in 1996 for the “Rich-Burn/Lean-Burn Low NOx Engine”.
During the last 14 yrs Jack was employed in the Oil and Gas Industry. He has held roles ranging from Staff Engineer to the Vice President of Engineering at Hanover/Exterran, Valerus/SNC Lavalin, and Tri-Point Oil and Gas Production Systems. Jack packaged ARIEL high speed separable compressors driven by natural gas fueled Caterpillar and Waukesha engines, as well as motors up to 5,000 hp. He also sized and designed sand separators, free water knock outs, 3-phase separators, test separators, heated separators/heater treaters, line heaters, flare knock out drums, flares, storage tanks, piping, and specified the associated end devices. Jack is passionate about supporting recommendations and designs with quantitative analysis and will do the same in support of your project.
